Cement Boom
As Nigeria’s construction industry grows, the country’s cement producers find their product in huge demand
Nigeria’s construction boom has seen the country’s demand for cement skyrocket, and the country’s major producers are scrambling to ensure supply. With prices at record levels, the opportunities for profit are many, but to create a sustainable level of growth both for the industry and for the construction sector depending on it, the industry and the government are taking steps to increase supply and bring down prices.Major players investing in expansion
Nigeria’s demand for cement has risen enormously in the last decade. In 2001, the country consumed around 8.1 million tonnes of the building material; this had risen to around 12 million tonnes by 2006, and annual demand today is variously estimated at anywhere between 18 million and 30 million tonnes. With total production at around 7 million tonnes between all of the major producers, the shortfall between supply and demand is significant. Cement producers are investing heavily in new facilities as they attempt to bridge the gap.
